Hilfiger will personally work with each contestant, assessing their personal style and music genre to help hone their image. “I will look at where they were, where they are today and the possibility of where they could go,” he told told WWD. “Because I don’t think their image will evolve without some trial and error. We need to take into consideration their ages, color preferences, sizes, what types of music they will be performing, what they wear on their feet and how they wear their hair. There is going to be a real package put together on each person.”
While American Idol is largely a talent-based show, there's no question that a contestant's image plays a huge part in their success. “If you look at what makes a star, it’s not only musical talent, it’s the complete package," Hilfiger said. "And that includes image. If you look at great superstars from Michael Jackson to Madonna and Lady Gaga and Katy Perry today, they each have a unique style and that adds to their persona. It’s the icing on the cake.”
AI may have paved the way for singing competitions, but with new shows like The Voice, The X Factor, and America's Got Talent, producers have had to come up with new ideas to distinguish themselves. Cécile Frot-Coutaz, one of the show’s executive producers, said the goal of this new fashionable addition is to add "a different layer to the show and hopefully people will like it."
Hilfiger is thrilled to be changing it up. “I thought it would be exciting and challenging and different, a place where I could use all of my experience in fashion and music,” he said.
We can't help but wonder if Hilfiger will also be imparting some of that style expertise unto Steven Tyler's zany ensembles.
