Angelina Jolie's Rebellious Romance

Angelina Jolie (Getty) Just the mention of Angelina Jolie's name evokes seduction with a dark edge. While her sexiness may be intangible, her sultry style is replicable in the form of black velvet, leather and chiffon. When Angelina first stepped into the spotlight, she was a notorious wild child who professed her love for her brother and carried a vile of Billy Bob Thornton's blood around her neck. The actress has come a long way, but her element of mystery and rebellious fashion sense stayed intact.

While everyone loves a black dress (including repeat wearers like Kim Kardashian and, dare I mention, Jennifer Aniston), Angelina has cornered the elegant bad girl market for herself. In fact, her signature look is thoroughly ingrained in everyone's mind: ivory skin, a nude pout, smoky cat eyes and chocolate Barberella-styled tresses. She always wears an ensemble that manages to look both hard and soft; edgy and refined.

Elvira meets dominatrix for Angelina's mercilessly sexy leather-drenched look at the Mr. & Mrs. Smith Hollywood premiere in 2005. While I've never been a fan of leather on the red carpet, the dress is undeniably signature Jolie.

The LBD

No style retrospective is ever complete without the appearance (or three) of a little black dress. Angie looked killer at a premiere in 2007 wearing a dress that epitomized what every LBD aims to be: chic, curve-flattering and effortlessly seductive.

As a lover of all things Elie Saab, it's no surprise Angelina's Oscar dress from 2009 was hands down my favorite. The sweetheart neckline suggested retro bombshell and emerald jewelry added an unexpected (but welcome) pop of color.

Velvet Vixen

Until this last year, velvet had been cast off as a thing of the '80s or a fabric aimed at evening wear for older generations. Angelina, along with a slew of runway designers, gave velvet its second wind. The actress wore her Atelier Versace gown with a bedazzled bodice and lustrous velvet skirt to the Tourist premiere in Spain. I wonder if Angelina is one of the few people who can pull off a shawl without bordering on dowdy.

Angelina's Michael Kors' ensemble for the Kung Fu Panda 2 premiere embodied the perfect day-to-night look so many women aim for (but perhaps with a slightly modified slit). Brilliantly, she managed to make a black shin-length skirt and silk blouse both sophisticated and alluring.

For the Hollywood premiere of In the Land of Blood and Honey, Angelina strayed just slightly from her series of all-black ensembles and selected a midnight blue Romona Keveza dress. Her lack of accessories with the simple silhouette of the design personified the actress' captivating minimalism.
Want to embrace your inner Angelina?

Here are the keys to achieving her sensationally chic style:

1. Wear dark colors. They are ceaselessly flattering and are the foundation for a dramatic look.
2. Try a smoldering cat eye. Angelina always chooses to emphasize her eyes rather than her lips, wearing smoky eyeshadow and bold liner with just a subtle lip gloss.
3. Minimalize! This element is important both in the garments and accessories you choose. You will never see Ms. Jolie in a ruffled attention-grabbing frock, wearing too much jewelry or stepping out in a pair of trendy statement heels. Look for clean lines and invest in classic shoes and purses.
4. Don't fear volume. Long locks never weigh down Angie's look, instead she backcombs the roots of her chestnut tresses and sweeps them out of her face to create a '60s-inspired bombshell 'do.
5. Flatter your figure! This seems obvious, but the importance of a perfect fit cannot be over-emphasized. Angelina's dresses are all tailored to her curves, nipped at the waist while emphasizing her enviable assets. Don't wear something that doesn't suit your body type and only looks good at certain angles (or when you suck in your stomach really hard!). When something makes you look fabulous without a second thought, you will exude confidence. And essentially, that's what Angelina is all about.
